This service is rooted in Christian tradition going back at least to the 9th century, with some aspects reaching as far back as the 4th century. During this service, we’ll remember the saints who have gone on before us, both in the recent past and reaching further back in time. We’ll reflect on the cloud of witnesses described in Hebrews 11 and 12, those worthies who’ve gone on before us and now are envisioned as cheering us on (Hebrews 12:1-3), as we run the race of faith with our eyes fixed on Jesus. Such a gathering can be greatly beneficial, particularly for those walking the road of grief. All Saints’ Day is an opportunity for us to lament the loss of loved ones in recent years, to cry out to God in our sorrow, and also to entrust our lives and our loved ones to God’s care.
