Most of us have played this game where you try to find Waldo in a large group of people. There have been times when I’ve said that he wasn’t there because I couldn’t see him. Then someone points him out to me. He was right in front of me the whole time.
Sometimes we have the same question about God. When we are going through a difficult time in our life, we cry out “Where are you God?” We may be facing the loss of a loved one; a serious illness of our own or someone in the family; marriage problems; or financial problems. And we wonder where God is.
Then you hear the sound of a lawn mower and you walk outside and a friend is mowing your yard! He tells you that God told him to mow your yard for the rest of the summer. Then a lady from church shows up with a bucket of cleaning supplies and says she’s there to clean your house. Or the Sunday morning that a loved one dies, another lady from church shows up and says she felt she needed to be with you rather than at the building. She holds your hand and prays for you because you can’t pray for yourself, answers your phone because you are unable to talk, hugs you when you break down in tears.
Not to mention all the calls, cards, texts, and e-mails you receive. And then you walk outside. The sun is shining, birds are chirping, flowers are in bloom and you say “Good morning, God!” He was right in front of you the whole time.
I’m reminded of the poem “Footprints in the Sand.” It’s the story of someone reviewing their life with the Lord. For much of their life they see two sets of footprints as they walk with the Lord. During difficult times however, there is only one set of footprints. They ask the Lord why He abandoned them when times were tough. “Oh, my child!” says the Lord. “Those footprints you see are mine. It was during those times that I carried you!”
