We’re delighted to welcome and ordain Chandler Darby today as our new youth minister. We have been praying for this day for many months and are so grateful for God’s answer through Chandler. I invited Chandler to share his answers to a variety of get-acquainted questions and invite you to enjoy his answers as we get to know one another better.
Birthday: January 9, 1992
Education: BA in Acting (University of Northern Colorado); MDiv (Pepperdine) Favorite meal I love food and culture; one of my favorite parts of traveling is trying the local cuisine. I also love a busy kitchen where everyone is working together to prepare a home cooked meal. I have too many favorites to mention, but a few local favorite spots are: Bangkok Thai, Namaste Spiceland, Sugarfish, Sweetgreen.
Favorite dessert: Super dark chocolate; Side Car Donuts (the Butter and Salt flavor)
Favorite music: A range of genres: melodic folky acoustic to lyrical hip-hop. A few examples respectively: The Tallest Man on Earth, Fleet Foxes, Ben Rector, nobigdyl (pronounced “no big deal”), Aha Gazelle.
Favorite movie: I’m a fan of adventure classics: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Goonies, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings.
Favorite team: The Atlanta Braves (nostalgic for me), Angel City Football Club. I don’t follow sports but I love to play them.
Favorite place: I love the outdoors – the mountains, the elements. Central California, the Pacific Northwest, and Colorado are a few highlights.
Favorite book: I was afraid of books when I was younger, then I fell in love with them later in life. My gateway literature was nonfiction theology, so I’m still catching up on many of the classic fiction titles. Luci has been especially helpful in this regard; it is wonderful experiencing the Narnia books together for the first time. My favorite author though goes to Wendell Berry; he is very influential for me.
Favorite book of Scripture: I love the book of Acts. What an incredible picture of God’s category-breaking grace and initiative.
Favorite Christian author(s): David deSilva, Norman Wirzba, Miroslav Volf
Favorite worship song or hymn: By The Mark, by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
Morning person or night owl? There is magic in the dawning of a quiet, crisp morning.
What is your superpower? Converting non-coffee drinkers.
Spiritual hero: The “man with leprosy” from Matthew 8:2 who said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
What is most exciting to you about coming to Conejo Church? Becoming a part of the CVCC community, building relationships – especially among the youth, and journeying through life and faith together.
What has drawn you to ministry? I sense that Jesus orients me to a reality that is so rich and deep and full of meaning that I am compelled to pursue him with my whole life and to offer it in service to his will, in which love of God and neighbor is central. As the complexities of life seem to grow with the seasons, so does my sense of the height and depth of God’s love – of the person of God rather than simply the concept of God. In this way, I feel drawn to minister to a generation seeking depth of relationship, genuine connection, and vibrant faith.
