“But as it is, God arranged the members in the body,
each one of them, as he chose.” 1 Corinthians 12:18
You may or may not have been aware that last Sunday we had a mini-crisis at church that made my blood run cold: both the men’s and women’s bathrooms were suddenly out of service right before our worship service was set to begin. Water was coming up out of the floor drains in both bathrooms. Though I was preoccupied with the start of our worship assembly, others spontaneously joined forces to solve the problem. The following is a lightly edited recap by TJ Reynolds, who was involved in finding a solution:
“Penny and Paula quickly cleaned up the mess in the women’s bathroom and made signs to direct people temporarily to the Nursery bathroom. Phil and Guy went outside and flushed the sewer clean-out line to be sure that it was clear. Allan and Dave Green contacted a neighborhood plumber in case he was needed. David Stephens joined in with the idea to force water through the drain in the cleaning closet floor. It worked! The whole episode lasted about 40 minutes. What a resourceful and caring group we have!”
You might be tempted to gloss over this as a story about nothing. But with a church full of worshippers, all of whom have bladders, my mind was spinning with thoughts of people having to leave the property in search of a restroom. But as we were preparing to share in communion, Phil came and whispered to me that the problem was solved! Needless to say, I am most grateful for each of these people (and others I’m not aware of) who saw the need, rolled up their sleeves, and got to work.
I am once again grateful for this very tangible reminder of how God uses the various gifts within the body of Christ in such a way that all benefit. Or as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:7, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” I appreciate how each of us have gifts that benefit others. If it was up to me to fix the flooded drains, we’d all be looking for our galoshes. I hope we will give a hearty “thank you” to all these wonderful volunteers when we see them, as well as so many who serve in a beautiful variety of ways for the common good at Conejo.
