Every four years or so, the Conejo Church engages in the congregational process of elder selection. It is a vital undertaking that calls each Conejo Church member to prayerful reflection and thoughtful participation. Elders shepherd the people of God spiritually, oversee the health and direction of the church, and humbly serve as godly examples in the local congregation. Last Sunday, Chris Stivers announced the beginning of our 2026 process along with the schedule below.
August 2, 9 – Announce to the congregation the elder selection process
August 2-3 – Emails go out to the congregation encouraging nominations
August 2–23 – Current CVCC members submit nominations
August 23-29 – Elders contact nominees receiving sufficient congregational support (at least 20% of all nominations), determining their interest / willingness to serve
August 30 – Presentation of nominees who are willing to go forward to the congregation
August 30 –September 15 – Time to discuss and raise questions about nominees, resolving any potential Scriptural objections
September 13 – Conduct congregational discussion with nominees in a town hall setting
September 14 – Deadline for submitting Scriptural objections regarding any nominees
September 17 – Distribute affirmation ballots to the congregation
October 1 – Affirmation ballots due to selection process committee
October 4 – Announcement of all affirmed elders to the congregation (those receiving affirmation from at least 70% of those submitting affirmation ballots)
October 11 – Formal installation of new slate of elders
This past week, emails were sent to Conejo members, outlining the process and soliciting your nominations for elders. (If you are a Conejo member and did not receive an email, please contact me!) We invite you to prayerfully consider and nominate individuals from our church body you believe are fit for the task. An “Elder Nominations” box for paper nominations has been set up in the foyer area of the building or you may send e-mail nominations to cvccnominations2026@gmail.com. An important reminder: no anonymous nominations will be accepted, so please include your full name with your paper or e-mail nominations.
As we did four years ago, we welcome nominations of either male or female members. Though thoughtful differences of opinion exist on this, I believe the opening of our vision statement provides the perspective we need to guide us through together: “The Conejo Valley Church of Christ seeks to be a thick intergenerational community of reciprocal love and grace, embodying the Christ-centered, Spirit-led character and durable unity of the church…” Just as families with differences continue to love each other through their differences, I invite our community to show durable loyalty and gracious love to each other as we continue to pursue a Jesus-focused faith and Spirit-led community life. Thank you, Church, for being this kind of faithful people of God.
